"Intro to Spanish" Pilot Project

This project began in two NLRSD elementary schools (Boone Park and Pike View) in the fall of 2008.

Using a certified Spanish teacher to teach students in K-5th grades, the goal of the project was to provide the elementary students of the NLRSD the opportunity to learn Spanish and equip those students with the resources needed to graduate.

Two years of a foreign language are required to graduate with a Smart Core degree in the state of Arkansas. At the time, Spanish was the only foreign language offered in the NLRSD, but it was not offered until the ninth grade.  It is proven that young children have an easier time learning a second language.

The ultimate goal was to provide this learning opportunity in all of the North Little Rock elementary schools in an effort to prepare all of the students.  Due to the success of the project, Spanish is not being offered in all of the elementary schools in the district.
